A serial car thief, who has caused multiple accidents, told a court driving gave him a sense of control after he was the passenger in a serious car crash six years ago.

Beau Blake, 34, fronted the Geelong Magistrates Court on Monday and pleaded guilty to charges including car theft, gun possession, drug-driving and unlicensed driving.

The charges related to a string of incidents in 2022 and 2023.

Blake smashed a stolen car into a power pole in Geelong West at 4am on September 20, 2022.

The crash caused the front windscreen of the car to shatter and Blake fled the scene.

When police arrived, they searched the wreckage of the car and located a bolt-action sawn-off firearm, 100mls of GHB, 1g of meth, stolen registration plates and Blake’s phone.

In another incident Blake caused a two-vehicle collision on the Princes Freeway near Lara on November 10, 2022.

He merged onto the freeway at speed and crossed between multiple lanes when he slammed into another car.

Blake’s ute, which was reported as a stolen car, spun across the freeway sustaining significant damage.

Police drug tested Blake and meth was found in his system.

A third accident in Lara on May 26, 2023 was also recorded by police.

The driver of a stolen BMW sedan involved in this accident fled the scene leaving behind prescription medication and a phone.

Both items were traced back to Blake.

CCTV footage also showed Blake driving the stolen car one day beforehand.

The court heard Blake refused to let other people drive after he was the passenger in a serious car accident in 2016 that “nearly tore him in half” and left him with mobility issues.

Magistrate Simon Gutherie dismissed this notion due to the dangerous nature of Blake’s offending.

“Considering his past injuries, you would think he would not want that to happen to other people,” he said.

“It would be good if he had his own vehicle or even a licence.”

Blake was also charged over further incidents including other car thefts, breaking into a car and stealing a delivery truck in Corio.

The truck was left unattended while the driver dropped off a package.

The driver then turned around to see Blake driving away in the delivery vehicle.

Police pursued the truck and used road spikes to pop the tyres.

Blake kept driving before dumping the truck and attempting to flee.

Mr Gutherie said all Blake seemed to do was steal cars and drive stolen vehicles.

“I don’t know what is going to be the wake-up call,” he said.

“Victoria has had a record road toll and Blake is very lucky he was not a part of that.”

He also noted it was concerning that the firearm seized by police was operational.

Blake is currently in custody having already served 247 days in relation to these matters.

Mr Gutherie ordered for Blake to be assessed by corrections to determine whether he was suitable for a community corrections order.

“I don’t know whether that will be a favourable report,” he said.

“You don’t seem to have much regard for court decisions.”

Blake will reappear before the Geelong Magistrates Court on March 15 for sentencing.
