Barwon Prison inmates armed with a shiv and a butterknife brawl in their cellblock

Two inmates were taken to hospital with multiple stab wounds inflicted by a shiv and a butterknife after an alleged prearranged fight.

Two Barwon Prison inmates have allegedly stabbed each other with a shiv and a butterknife on the top floor of their cell block.

Mitch Lay, 27, appeared before the Geelong Magistrates Court on Friday on affray charges.

The court heard Lay and another inmate went to the top floor of their cell block on March 14 last year, escorted by a third inmate.

Lay was armed with a shiv, and the second inmate came prepared with a butterknife.

Once upstairs the third inmate left and the armed pair spoke briefly before allegedly attacking each other, resulting in both inmates being stabbed multiple times.

Prison officers intervened and broke up the fight.

The entire incident was caught on CCTV footage.

Both inmates were taken to hospital with multiple stab wounds.

Lay was stabbed in the arm and back, while the other inmate was stabbed in the arms and the chest.

Neither inmate would comment on the altercation following the brawl.

Lay spent three months in solitary confinement following his return from hospital due to the fight.

Lay’s lawyer requested a sentence indication from Magistrate Simon Gutherie during the court proceedings.

“A prearranged appointment where both inmates were armed, what could go wrong?” Mr Gutherie said.

He also questioned why Lay would have a shiv while in custody.

Mr Gutherie indicated if Lay were to plead guilty over the fight he would have an additional two months added to his current prison term.

He is currently serving a minimum term of three years and eight months for an armed robbery.

Lay rejected this sentence indication and he will reappear before the Geelong Magistrates Court on April 16.

The second inmate involved in the brawl has also been charged over the incident.
