Two people believed to be riding a stolen motorcycle have been killed after police spotted the vehicle travelling at speed on the Gold Coast.

A 36-year-old Oxenford man and a 35-year-old Upper Coomera woman died in the horror crash at Helensvale.

The incident happened at the corner of Helensvale Rd and Siganto Dr around 1.30am on Saturday.

Gold Coast police acting chief superintendent Rhys Wildman said it was not a police pursuit as such.

He said the motorcycle, which was stolen last month from Biggera Waters, was seen by police travelling at high speed on Discovery Dr at Helensvale.

“Police proceeded to follow that motorcycle onto Helensvale Rd heading westbound,” he said.

“Police activated their warning devices in an attempt to intercept that motorcycle, however the motorcycle accelerated away from police.

“Officers immediately disengaged from that attempted intercept and shortly after … (came) across a motorcycle that had collided with a pole.

“Unfortunately, a 36-year-old male and a 35-year-old female have been found deceased at the scene.”

In a bizarre twist, police said 50-year-old male witness to the crash had been charged with high-range drink-driving after allegedly recording a blood alcohol reading of 0.217 per cent.

He was also charged with unlicensed and driving without prescribed interlock device and was bailed to appear at Southport Magistrates Court on December 9.

Police said the man was continuing to assist them with investigations into the crash.

Supt Wildman said it was a tragic incident which was being investigated by the Forensic Crash Unit and police Ethical Standards Command.

Supt Wildman would not say if the two people killed in the crash were known to police.
