A Sunshine Coast man has been killed after his motorcycle left the road and crashed on the Bunya Highway at Murgon on Tuesday night.

Police said it appeared the motorbike was travelling southeast along the Bunya Hwy when it left the road and crashed at the intersection near Barambah Rd about 9pm.

The rider, a 42-year-old Mount Coolum man, was declared deceased at the scene.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said passers-by alerted emergency services to the crash.

Witnesses or anyone with relevant vision is urged to contact police.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.

In Queensland, more than 58 people have died this year on motorcycles or mopeds which is up 9 on last year and up 18 on the five year average from 2018 to 2022.

The 44.3% increase on the five year average has sparked police warnings earlier this year for motorcyclists to take more care on the road and for drivers to be more aware of motorcyclists.

Last year, this publication revealed the number of registered motorbikes in Queensland jumped from 213,181 in June 30, 2019 to 232,052 by June 30 2022 – reflecting an 8.8 per cent increase in two years.

There have already been more than 200 people killed on Queensland roads in 2023, 16 more than the five year average.

On the Sunshine Coast, several motorbike crashes have killed riders over the past year.

A 39-year-old Parrearra man died on Chevallum Rd in Palmwoods, about 6.30pm on July 25, when he drove off the side of a bridge and hit the tree.

A Sunshine Coast 70-year-old man died in April on Mapleton Rd in Kureelpa following a crash between his motorbike and a ute.

Hayden Webb, 19, died in a crash between his motorbike and a car at the intersection of Diddillibah and Nambour Connection roads in March.

More to come.
