Moments after allegedly killing an aged care worker in a horrific school-zone crash, a young Caloundra man was found “pretending to sleep” in a home, new court documents reveal.

Caloundra West man Izac Kane Sefton-Bennett, 26, had his charges mentioned in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on September 19, however he is yet to enter a plea.

The New Zealand born man is accused of killing 52-year-old Burnside aged care worker Christella “Stella” Tan in a hit and run incident using a stolen Mercedes on September 15.

He is alleged to have fled the scene before “good Samaritan” residents stopped him from escaping in another car until police arrived.

He faces 12 charges including dangerous driving causing death while under the influence and leaving the scene of a crash, and four counts of possessing weapons or explosives.

He also faces two drug charges, failing to show proper respect to a deceased person with callous disregard, driving unlicensed, enter dwelling with intent at night, armed robbery and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

Police prosecutor Rebecca Lambert told the court Mr Sefton-Bennett remained in custody in the watch house.

Solicitor Danielle Gill told the court she was waiting to speak to the 26-year-old and take instructions, having not spoken with him since the charges were laid.

According to court documents a number of witnesses saw Mr Sefton-Bennett emerge from the stolen Mercedes following the crash at a Windsor Rd school zone, just after 7am.

They alleged he dropped an item, later discovered by police to be the shortened rifle, under a tree at Burnside Park before entering a nearby house.

Police then located Mr Sefton-Bennett “pretending to be asleep” in a bed at the property, according to court documents.

The documents also detail the theft of the Mercedes, stating the owner of the car was woken by a loud bang at his front door in Landsborough around 2am.

He then saw a man, alleged to be Mr Sefton-Bennett, who demanded the keys to the car and pulled a gun from his pants.

The intruder allegedly stole a number of items from the house before driving away in the car.

The Landsborough robbery was allegedly planned by Mr Sefton-Bennett and a known co-offender, according to documents, which state texts from the co-offender included a message saying “ready door unlocked, I’m guna act innocent”.

Magistrate Kurt Fowler adjourned the matter to the Maroochydore Magistrates Court for committal mention on November 17.

No application for bail was made.
