Two men and a woman have also died and an elderly woman was critically injured following a spate of crashes across the state on Friday afternoon and into the night.

A male person has died and police have closed a section of Nikenbah-Dundowran Rd, just outside Hervey Bay, after a serious traffic crash at around 7pm on Friday night.

Initial reports suggest that the car may have hit a pole, before coming off the road and into a ditch where it caught alight and was engulfed in flames.

The sole male occupant of the vehicle died at the scene of the incident. He is yet to be identified.

A police spokeswoman advising that motorists should avoid the area as the road would be closed for several hours.

Further north, a three-vehicle crash involving a truck and two cars has claimed the life of a woman in Nankin, east of Rockhampton just before 5pm.

Initial investigations suggest the woman was driving her BMW hatch westbound on Emu Park Rd before colliding with a truck heading in the opposite direction.

A third vehicle – a Suzuki Vitara – was unable to avoid the horror scene and collided with the truck in the immediate aftermath of the crash.

The drivers of the truck and Suzuki were not harmed, with motorists urged to avoid the scene into the evening while the clean up commences.

In the state’s far north, a man has died in a single-vehicle crash at Mareeba, west of Cairns, following what is believed to have been a medical episode behind the wheel.

Just before 4pm, a passing motorist found the 59-year-old Mareeba man unconscious at the wheel of a Ford Ranger utility on Herberton St, near the intersection with Walsh St.

While the details of the crash remain unclear, a police spokeswoman said that the incident appeared to have been caused by a medical episode, leading to the vehicle leaving the road and coming to a stop nearby.

An off-duty nurse attempted to resuscitate the man at the scene before emergency services arrived, transporting him to hospital in a critical condition.

He died a short time later, with a report now being prepared for the coroner.

In yet another significant incident, an elderly female driver has been transported to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a critical condition with head injuries after her car crashed into a nursing home in Little Mountain just after 7pm.
