Emerald Lakes Golf Club drowning: 23-year-old man dies after ‘mucking around’ with friends

How a 23-year-old man drowned at a popular Gold Coast golf course late on Sunday night has been revealed, with police saying alcohol was involved.

A man drowned at a Gold Coast golf course late on Sunday night after accepting a ‘dare’ from friends.

Superintendent Geoff Sheldon told ABC Gold Coast the man’s friends had dared him to swim in a lake at the Emerald Lakes Golf Club.

“Mucking around with mates and he’s gone under the surface and drowned,” he said.

“It would appear that he had been drinking in the afternoon and the fatal mix of alcohol and water seems to have taken another victim, unfortunately.”

Paramedics were called to Emerald Lakes Golf Club at Alabaster Drive, Carrara about 9.40pm after reports that a 23-year-old man was unconscious.

Witnesses performed CPR on the man before emergency services arrived.

A Queensland Ambulance spokesman said by the time paramedics arrived, the man was out of the water but was not breathing.

Paramedics attempted to resuscitate him but he died at the scene.

It was the second drowning on the Gold Coast on Sunday, with police reminding people to be aware of the dangers of alcohol and swimming ahead of the Easter long weekend.

Police are preparing a report for the coroner.

Golf has resumed as per normal at the club, with multiple buggies and people out having a hit as of 7am Monday.

In a statement, club director Christopher Bagley said management and staff were “extremely shocked and saddened by this tragedy”.

“Counselling is being provided to the staff and we are co-operating fully with the police investigation,” he said.
