DEVELOPER and real estate agent Renee Straguszi and her family will launch a planned 150-villa retirement facility at Gordonvale on Thursday.
Called Casa Mia Living, the development on a 3.8ha parcel of land it will have a range of amenities surrounding a central piazza in what Ms Straguszi said was a nod to the family’s Italian heritage.
Ms Straguszi, whose family has been behind Lakes Resort and Cairns One and more recently, the large scale Cutter’s Rise residential development at Gordonvale, said Casa Mia had been seven years in the making.
It will have ageing-in-place facilities as well as onsite respite care.
“It was important for us to create a community where residents have plenty of opportunity to be adventurous and remain independent, but then be able to call on help if they need,” Ms Straguszi said.
“Residents will live in self-contained villas but have access to on site care from one of Queensland’s leading home care providers and a separate on site respite centre.
“It means residents can continue to stay in their own homes, couples can stay together, and partners can have a trip to see the grandkids knowing their loved one is well cared for in their absence.”
She said one aim was for seniors to have the opportunity to expand their social life, with a full-time social co-ordinator creating daily activities.
There will be a restaurant, bar, cafe, gym, pool, wellness centre, hairdresser, community garden, a man cave and a ladies shed.
Casa Mia sales manager Michelle Reimann described Casa Mia as “a cruise ship on land, with residents able to choose their own adventure daily”.
“The village’s central piazza is designed to be the heart of the community, and it will be a place to meet for a daily coffee or catch up with visiting family and friends,” Ms Reimann said.
“It’s also a venue for special events and performances.”
Construction is set to start in October and expressions of interest are sought.
The development application for the facility stated providing on site care would mean residents were less likely to have to transition to alternate high care or palliative facilities.
It said there would be unobtrusive technology to monitor the wellbeing of residents and immediately provide care when needed.
“One of the main issues identified in the recent Aged Care Royal Commission was the lack of visitation and interaction with family once the resident entered the home, this predominantly stems from the clinical and Institutional nature of a lot of centres,” the document stated.
“The overall concept in this instance through the Piazza and facilities is designed provide an attractive and lively facility, which will further promote regular visitation by the resident’s children and grandchildren.”
It said most villas would be three bedrooms.
Stage two of the Cutter’s Rise development has just been released, with lots ranging from 600sq m to 1,650sq m.
There are plans for a medical centre and child care centre at the development which will ultimately comprise about 400 lots.
Ms Straguszi’s grandmother, the late Rose Straguszi, resided in a home on the land until she died, aged 92, in April 2019.
