It’s a growing trend among some Australians, as more couples file for divorce and fewer opt for marriage.

Brisbane-based sexologist, Naomi Hutchings, said Aussies are increasingly pushing back on what’s seen as “traditional” ways of having relationships, with many opting to become “throuples” – where three people are in a committed relationship.

Queenslanders Aaron, Shelly and Lauren are a loved up “exclusive throuple”, with Aaron, 39, and Shelly, 37, having been together for 18 years when Shelly met Lauren, 31, at a party.

“After that, we all went out on a date,” Lauren said.

“It was amazing, and we were all very keen on each other.”

While all three have experienced swinging and polyamory in the past, Lauren said their relationship was not an open one.

“This means that while we are practising polyamory – more than one love – we are exclusive in our relationship container. Just the three of us for now,” she said.

“I’ve gained two partners at once. Exclusive polyamory and falling in love with two people at the same time has been a new and intense experience.”

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ latest marriage and divorce data, a 30.6 per cent decrease in marriage from 2019 to 2020 was the largest ever reported.

During the same period, divorces increased by 1.9 per cent.

Sexologist Ms Hutchings, whose office is in Paddington, said people are becoming more open about discussing relationships other than monogamous ones – so much so she recently changed her session title from “couples” to “more than one”.

“Absolutely (throuples) are something I’m seeing more of,” she said.

“We’re getting more and more open about discussing things other than monogamy, but of course, just like monogamy, there are going to be pros and cons.

“Some people can love more people than one at once.”

Aaron, Lauren and Shelly’s OnlyFans “FitThrouple” account made almost $2000 in its first month.

Only a few months in, the group is looking at raking in up to $10,000 a month.

The three are scheduled to appear at Sexpo, the world’s largest and longest running adult exhibition, on from now through to Sunday at the Brisbane Exhibition and Convention Centre on Glenelg St, South Brisbane.
