Bride uses stool to kiss 7ft husband on wedding day

This Queensland bride needed to get creative standing on a stool to kiss her 7ft Australian volleyballer husband on their wedding day.

A date in hospital as an unconventional start to their relationship for Lucy Dixon and Australian Olympic volleyball player Thomas Edgar.

The pair met in 2018 on Tinder and after two dates, Tom suffered an ankle injury during a game and needed surgery.

Lucy now looks back on the moment as a milestone in their relationship.

“Our third date was in the hospital after Tom’s surgery where I also met his mum,” she says.

“Not long after this I got to meet his entire family as they were around to help him out as he was immobilised after surgery and then on crutches for a few weeks after that.”

Four years later, the Coorparoo couple celebrated their black tie wedding at Gabbinbar Homestead in Toowoomba in front of 96 guests.

The theme for the day was effortless elegance with a touch of modern romance.

How did you meet? Lucy: We matched on Tinder in March 2018.

However I was notoriously slack at checking messages and missed Tom’s initial conversation. He found me on Instagram and tried messaging me there.

The catch was that Tom was living in Japan (to play volleyball) so we had to wait a few weeks before our first date, which was brunch at Pearl Cafe in Woolloongabba and there was an instant spark!

The proposal? With Tom’s career being based in Japan for the past four years, our relationship was long distance. We tried to make the most of the situation and travelled the world together through volleyball. Then the pandemic hit.

Like many couples and families we were unable to see each other for nine months. Being apart definitely made the heart grow fonder and it also made Tom realise how much I meant to him.

Tom proposed a few weeks after being home on a trip that we took to Hamilton Island. He wanted to watch the sunrise at Passage Peak and found the perfect spot. It was a very quick yes from me.

We had Champagne and orange juice on hand to celebrate that Tom had secretly packed and hiked up the mountain.

I commissioned an amazing artist to paint the photo that was taken of us from this moment and I gifted Tom this painting on our wedding day.

Hen’s night? I was lucky enough to have two! First was a surprise organised by my beautiful bridesmaids; a long lunch at Manly Boathouse followed by a silent disco, a drag queen performance and dancing. Later I had a long lunch at Ciao Papi at Howard Smith Wharves with my cousins, aunties and Tom’s family.

Buck’s night? Weekend escape to the Gold Coast with Topgolf, axe throwing and drinks at The Star Casino.

Any unique or surprising details about your wedding? We wanted to include our family and loved ones as much as possible. From our wedding invites, which my Aunty Georgie helped design (and then posting as we were overseas), to our beautiful bombaniers, which were handmade chocolate by my Aunty Robyn.

Plus, my wedding earrings and the bridesmaid’s earrings were designed and made by close family friends Pam and Annabel from Lolita’s Pearls. During our ceremony, my mum read a passage that had been read on my parents’ wedding day. Plus, we did a second “first kiss” with me standing on a stool because Tom is so tall.

Our guests had a laugh at this. We organised for Tom’s two nieces to come up to the altar to give us our wedding bands.

My dad and I also surprised all our guests with a father-daughter dance we had learnt over the course of five weeks to Van Morrison’s Have I Told You Lately. We had secretly asked all the fathers and daughters who were in the room to join us half way through the song.

Tom and I had also arranged for fireworks behind us as we cut the cake! This was a surprise to everyone. The last big surprise was one of my best friends flying in from London to attend the wedding.

What was the standout moment of the day?

Lucy: Having my dad walk me down the aisle and seeing Tom’s face will be something I will never forget. But my dad singing during his father of the bride speech is definitely a highlight! He changed the lyrics of Sweet Caroline to Lucy Eloise and it was incredible and very out of character for him! Everyone stood up and sang along.
Thomas:
When I first saw Lucy at the top of the aisle will forever be in my mind. How beautiful she looked and that feeling of genuine happiness I had in that moment. I also loved the speeches at the reception.

What would you do differently? Lucy: The only thing I can think of would be to have started the dance floor a little earlier. It was a huge highlight and thanks to our incredible band (Nick Trovas Band) we had everyone on the dance floor. We just wished the party didn’t have to end, it was an incredible way to finish.

What did you spend extra on? I’m a sucker for details. We did organise pashminas and hand warmers for our guests as our wedding was in the middle of winter. We also had slippers available for anyone to change into on the dance floor.
