A snowy backdrop, dramatic mountain views and a pre-wedding snowboard made for the perfect winter wonderland wedding for this Brisbane couple.
Georgia Craig and Greg Poole, who live in Red Hill in Brisbane’s northern suburbs, had the ultimate destination wedding on September 3 this year, tying the knot outside the Thredbo Golf Course before continuing the party inside at the Thredbo Alpine Hotel.
The pair were ready to warm their guests up as temperatures dropped with individual heat packs, mulled wine, apple cider and, the couple’s favourite, fireball whiskey shots.
After getting together in 2012, their relationship has been a non-stop adventure with Greg and Georgia’s jobs seeing them work and live across Australia before settling together in Brisbane in 2020.
How did you meet? Georgia: We met in Ballarat during a university “mining games” through friends, while we both studied at UNSW (University of New South Wales) in Sydney. There was an instant attraction and the relationship rapidly blossomed. While the road hasn’t been easy due to a lot of long distance stints between Sydney, Perth, and now Brisbane, with the most recent due to border lockdowns, our love has never been stronger and we have enjoyed many adventures along the way. We now live happily in Brisbane, a little closer to family than Perth.
The proposal? Greg had been stuck in Perth finishing a doctorate in geology during the pandemic border closures, while I had moved to Brisbane. I expected to be settled in before going ring shopping but surprises and tricks are Greg’s favourite thing and he had secretly designed and ordered a ring ready to pop the question at the perfect time.
He nailed the design and even got the sizing right using some high school maths and a mirror selfie I’d sent him, ha!
Visiting family for Christmas in Jervis Bay signalled the perfect time to pop the question. Greg suggested a bushwalk around Booderee National Park and after having a swim at Murrays Beach, with the ring tied around the cord of his budgie smugglers, walking along the beach he dropped to one knee on the sand. I was so shocked that I thought he was joking but after a few profanities and some convincing, there was a resounding “yes” and the grin still hasn’t faded.
Hens Night? Friends from all over Australia flew into Brisbane. The girls spent the day at Movie World and then dinner at Mado Turkish and karaoke at Little Big House, South Bank.
Bucks Night? Close friends and family from Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide all gathered on the Gold Coast at an apartment at Q1. Starting with the groom dressed as a bride at paintball, the night ended with Greg dragging the entire party dancing.
How and why did you choose your wedding venue? Our first holiday together was skiing in Japan and we’ve both grown up with a love of the snow. When Georgia suggested Thredbo as an option, we knew it was going to be more work and stress trying to organise a wedding from afar, but we are so glad that we stuck to our guns. We couldn’t have imagined a more perfect day that was just so us!
What did you do in the lead-up to your ceremony? We did photos because we didn’t want to miss out on spending time with our friends at the party and we had an action- packed day planned to ski down the mountain. We did a first look at the chalet and then the entire wedding party caught the Kosciuszko Chairlift to the top of the mountain. Greg
and I, along with Justin, the best man, Morgan, the maid-of-honour, and our photographer made our way down the ski slopes in full wedding clothes.
What were some of the unique details? Both of our mums are so incredibly talented. The space was made more special by dressing the walls in dreamy white fabric which Kathy (Greg’s mum) sewed, and by the handmade ceramic centrepieces and native floral table decorations made by Tobi (Georgia’s mum). Every Saturday night at Thredbo during the winter season there is a flare run by the ski instructors and fireworks. We got everyone out on the deck to watch it.
What was the standout moment? Georgia: Tapping Greg on the shoulder during our first look and his eyes welled up before he hugged me. Greg: Snowboarding down the front of Thredbo, following my future bride in awe of how amazing she is.
How did you choose your wedding dress?I went in thinking I wanted a very wintry dress but all the sleeved dresses I tried didn’t feel right and also impeded activity which would have been a problem knowing I wanted to ski down a mountain. I found a few styles and designers I liked and in the end found a dress that had just the right amount of sparkle, lace and sass that suited me. I didn’t wear a veil as I had my secret weapon for the cold weather, my “Game of Thrones cloak” made completely by my wonderful mother-in-law, Kathy. She also sewed my bridesmaids’ fur shawls.
