My gender reveal party idea was a complete fail, but my husband saved the day!

Elyssa wanted to surprise her husband Jon with an intimate gender reveal party, just between them.

So she baked a cake.

Adding the food colouring to the cake mix, she covered it with white icing and added a few blueberries and strawberries on top. 

She laid out a picnic rug in the garden and set up her camera to film his reaction.

“It's not supposed to be green!”

But things didn’t go exactly as planned, according to the TikTok video. “Watch my husband save our intimate gender reveal,” the caption read. 

Holding empty champagne glasses, the American couple counted down from three, closed their eyes and scooped into the cake. 

Peering at the cake, her husband looked visibly confused - there was no blue or pink inside.

“It’s green?” he asked before they both laughed in confusion. “It’s not supposed to be green!” she said, quickly bursting into tears.

As she continued crying, Jon comforted her and assured her it would be ok. “I tried my best,” she sobbed. 

“The pregnancy hormones hit hard!” Elyssa later captioned the video.

Husband’s quick thinking saves the day

After a few minutes passed, they came up with a solution. He would turn his back, and she would feed him one of the berries on the cake. 

“I’ll close my eyes, you make me eat it, and I’ll know by the flavour what it is,” he explained.

Blueberries meant they were having a boy, and strawberries signified a girl. 

She popped a blueberry into his mouth, and he took a bite. “We’re having a boy?” he asked excitedly before hugging Elyssa. 

Elyssa realised her mistake afterwards. “When I made the cake, I might have forgotten about colour theory,” she explained.

“I love how he turned that around and made it another fun surprise”

The video has amassed over 30 million views, and people were quick to point out the husband’s innovative thinking. 

“Some quick thinking there,” wrote one person. “I love how he turned that around and made it another fun surprise!” another said. 

“Although your cake didn't turn out how you wanted, this was the best outcome and most genuine reveal I've seen,” one supporter said. 

Some doubted the legitimacy of the girl's tears, but others defended the mum-to-be.

“I would’ve had the exact same reaction as her,” a woman wrote. “[If] it didn’t go right, I’d be so upset at that moment.” 

Others questioned why Jon didn’t assume the green was supposed to be blue. “If the cake wasn’t pink, then it should’ve been obvious it was a boy right away,” someone argued. 

“Green could not ever have come from pink, so how did he not realise it was a boy?” another added.
