The viral Elf on the Shelf prank

Cece, aiming to share her twist on the tradition, filmed herself carrying out the prank on TikTok under the username @butterrgirll.

Her controversial strategy involved cutting up her children's pyjamas while they slept and using them as a DIY blanket for her elf.

In the clip, she's seen taking a pair of scissors to her son and daughter's PJs while they're deep asleep.

She then writes a cheeky note from the elf saying, "I was getting cold… hope you don’t mind" and then uses the fragments of clothing to cover up the elf's body.

The clip has now amassed an astonishing 25.4 million views in less than a week.

"This is just plain wrong"

The TikTok community didn't hold back when it came to voicing their opinions on the video.

Over 16k comments poured in, and let's just say, the jury wasn't in favour of Cece's elf antics.

One top commenter didn't mince their words, saying, "Doing mean things to your kids and blaming it on an elf is ridiculous. This is not cool. There are a million and one ways to do Elf on the Shelf without doing this."

Another user echoed this sentiment, saying, "This is not funny. Elf on the Shelf is supposed to be harmless and non-destructive. This is just mean to do to your kids."

"Elf on the Shelf should be cute and funny. Stuff like this is the same as bullying your children," wrote someone else. "Destroying their property is not a fun game."

"Honestly this is horrible, [you’re] wrong for purposely cutting your children’s clothes. I get it’s for Elf on the Shelf but that’s plain wrong," voiced another critic.

Another woman admitted, "I would cry if my mum cut my clothes as a kid."

"Y’all be taking ELF ON A SHELF TOO FAR!" claimed someone else.

"I'm too broke for this"

Amidst the backlash, a different aspect of the debate emerged.

Many pointed out that clearly, money wasn't an issue for Cece.

"Oh she got money money," one user quipped.

Then someone else concluded, "I'm too broke for this."
