Love it or hate it: Cult $3 ALDI dessert divides due to unusual ingredient

While some said it "made them gag" others said it was "heavenly."

$3 Aldi item goes viral

ALDI has stirred up controversy with one of its budget dessert offerings - the Deli Originals Fresh Brownie Batter Flavoured Dessert Dip.

The sweet treat, which retails for around $3, has polarised shoppers into two distinct camps - those who can't get enough of it, and those who are less than impressed.

So how could a brownie-flavoured dip be anything but delicious?

Well, it has an unusual hidden ingredient... chickpeas!

"It literally tasted like a chocolate milkshake"

The dip, which already has a cult-following thanks to TikToker Adrian Widjy's clip that has over 200,000 views, has been thrust into the limelight once again thanks to the ALDI Aisle of Shame Facebook Community.

And it's caused just as much of a stir as the first time it went viral.

But this time, it's more due to the creative way a shopper has used the gluten and dairy-free dip.

She shared with the group, "My new discovery: I’ve been getting ALDI dessert hummus for years but the other night I thought, hmmm, what if I put it in a milkshake? AND IT WAS DELICIOUS."

"It literally tasted like a chocolate chip milkshake," she continued. "Just replace the chocolate syrup with the hummus."

Then anticipating some scepticism, she added: "I know it sounds weird and gross but if you are willing to be a little adventurous try it out!"

"So bitter, not a fan"

And she was right - people weren't sold on it, with one person saying: "I tried the dessert hummus at ALDI and gagged, it was beyond disgusting."

"So bitter, not a fan. Won't be trying again," replied another.

"The texture was strange and would be even weirder in a milkshake," claimed someone else.

And then this person simply stated: "A chickpea milkshake? No thank you."

"Genius! Such a good way to add protein to a shake"

However, some shared that they thought her creation sounded great.

"Yum, looks so delicious! Amazing for sneaking veggies in for the kids, too," someone wrote.

"Genius! Such a good way to add protein to a shake without powder," another pointed out.

"Great idea! I would add some peppermint extract to make it mint-choc flavoured," suggested someone else.

Meanwhile, others couldn't help but point out the elephant in the room in the woman's photo.

"Weird question, do you have your hummus milkshake in the shower?" someone asked, and isn't that a sentence you never thought you'd read?

The woman replied: "Yes, my milkshake is in a holder attached to the shower wall. I have a bath with a book, a candle and a milkshake often as self-care."

Okay ALDI, take note! Time to bring out a shower cup holder for all these hummus milkshakes ASAP!
