Where to find Ekka steakhouse’s epic $95 award-winning, uber-rare wagyu

It’s one of the hardest to find steaks in Australia, only available in a handful of restaurants nationwide and exported to Japan and the Middle East. Now it’s being dished up in Brisbane.

It’s one of the rarest steaks of its kind – both in how its best served and its scarcity – a $95, award-winning wagyu that’s exported as far as Japan and the Middle East on offer at the Ekka.

The Royal Queensland Steakhouse and Bar is one of only a handful of restaurants Australia-wide to serve the wagyu rib fillet 300g Stockyard Black.

The Darling Downs product was the branded beef grand champion at the 2022 Royal Queensland awards.

Royal Queensland Steakhouse and Bar executive sous chef Dean Brewer said it was a privilege to showcase the uber-rare, uber-delicious morsel.

“My kitchen staff are very excited to use it, and don’t tell anyone, but we do get to taste it and I tell you what, it’s on the money,” Mr Brewer said.

The $95 steak is made with simple, locally sourced ingredients.

“Fire roasted red onions, dressed in olive oil and cherry vinegar with smoked sea salt, that’s all you need,” he said.

“You’d want it medium rare at most. It’s beautifully nutty and caramelised.

“It’s a premium steak, something special and the farmers are extremely proud of their product.”

Mr Brewer said the steakhouse was set to sell 80-90kg of the wagyu throughout the nine-day Ekka.

Sherwood’s Anna Hawke and Norman Park’s Jake Magee forked out for a taste of the wagyu and said it was worth every penny.

“Oh that’s absolutely delicious,” Ms Hawke said.
