Whether you like your matcha as a latte, dessert, ice cream or milk tea, green tea-flavoured food and drink has boomed across Brisbane.
Trumpeted as being good for your heart and weight – not when it’s in dessert form of course – matcha varies in quality almost as much as it does applications.
So we’ve put together Brisbane’s best matcha spots, serving up leaf-flavoured fare in all manners.
TSUKI PATISSERIE
Westfield Garden City, Logan Rd, Upper Mount Gravatt
This Japanese-style patisserie is a favourite of foodies for its ethereally light cakes and sweets, but it's the matcha range that has become a signature. The store sells matcha cakes, soft serve, crepe cakes and cookies, as well as bespoke treats if you’re a true green fiend.
KRAZY DESSERT RESTAURANT & BAR
Hamilton and Sunnybank Hills
If you like your matcha sweet, then this fun and playful dessert bar answers the call. It serves up everything from matcha-flavoured basque cheesecakes to swiss rolls, and their famous egg waffles dusted in matcha powder with a matcha pouring sauce and, of course, matcha ice cream.
MOUNTAIN RIVER PATISSERIE
84 Mango St, Runcorn
This small 38-seat Japanese-inspired cafe in Brisbane’s south has become known as the green dream by some loyal matcha enthusiasts, with their unique pastries and desserts that take green tea to another level. Expect the likes of match lava tarts, cheesecakes, hot and cold lattes, and an endless array of matcha specials such as a matcha mont blanc and a matcha almond cake with matcha custard and meringue.
SONDER DESSERT
7c Farne St, Sunnybank Hills
A staple on their dessert menu and an almost guaranteed sell-out at Sonder is their matcha warabi mochi. These powder-dusted, jiggly orbs have a soft, chewy texture ideal for dipping in their matcha syrup. There are three other matcha desserts on the regular menu, plus an ever-evolving line-up of green sweets, from matcha financiers to matcha banana tarts, and even matcha chocolate cake. Matcha also comes in liquid form with four different varieties of matcha float, including one with rice dumplings and sweet red bean paste.

Specialising in Asian desserts, this brightly coloured shopping centre dessert bar offers no shortage of moss-hued mouthfuls. Think parfaits with matcha ice cream, waffles, milk and bubble teas, soft serves and more.
PADDINGTON SOCIAL
167 Given Tce, Paddington
This neighbourhood bakery has earned itself a reputation as one of Brisbane’s best and its matcha pastry specials should not be missed. Look out for pastry queen and co-owner Gibb Mookachonpan’s matcha cream-topped and filled croissants in particular.
RENO FINE PATISSERIE
4/261 Warrigal Rd, Eight Mile Plains
This Asian-leaning patisserie makes a matcha croissant good enough to drive across town for. Only available on weekends, it features a buttery croissant filled with matcha custard coated with a matcha white chocolate.
ODAYA TEA
Sunnybank Plaza, 5B/358 Mains Rd, Sunnybank
This Japanese operation takes it matcha incredibly seriously, importing only the finest quality tea with a bold flavour. Purists can have it straight up, or in all forms of drinks, cakes, ice creams and desserts, including a matcha basque cheesecake and matcha tiramisu. True devotees can even buy the leaves or perhaps a tub of the ice cream and take it home for later.
MACHI MACHI
Brisbane City and Sunnybank
Taiwan’s famous milk tea brand first hit Australia in 2019 and has been winning over matcha fans ever since. A favourite is the matcha latte smoothie with strawberry cream cheese foam, as well as the Shizouka matcha latte with panna cotta.
MILKSHA
Brisbane City and Sunnybank
This milk tea business has developed a cult following for using premium-quality milk and fresh ingredients, and it’s their “Japanese matcha milk” flavour that is among the most popular. It comes loaded with red beans at the bottom, with the matcha floating on top above a ring of milk. For a slight twist on the traditional matcha, Milksha also offers genmaicha, which is a brown rice green tea that is adored with their honey pearls.

If you like your matcha cold and creamy then you can’t go past this milk tea business’s cheese shizouka matcha milk tea with a thick layer of sweet, airy cream cheese crowning a matcha-flavoured latte. And if you prefer your matcha frozen, try the soft serve with red beans.
