Luxury strawberry sundae, bacon on a stick: Ekka’s awesome new foods for 2023
Several new food additions will be available at the Ekka this year including a controversial take on the iconic strawberry sundae and a bacon lollipop which will be a struggle to fit in your mouth.

Several delicious food additions will be available at the Ekka this year including a controversial new take on the strawberry sundae and a massive bacon lollipop which is sure to be filling.
The iconic sundae with a twist will be available at the Royal Queensland Steakhouse for just $10, but the luxe take will be missing one component – ice-cream.
The dessert is made up of strawberry mousse, marshmallow, strawberry compote, strawberry velvet and all in the shape of the strawberry.
But don’t worry the iconic strawberry sundae will also still be at the Ekka.
The new take is just one of many additions to the Ekka this year including the Bacon Lollipop from Joey’s Bacon House Explosion at the Gourmet Plaza.
Joey’s Bacon House owner Joe Florio said the $18 snack was a good quality pork chop, heavily marinated.
“One thing we do is I marinate very heavily into my product in the meat so there’s flavour right through it,” he said.
“Whatever bite you grab there’s flavour through it.”
Mr Florio said he hoped the snack would be popular as it was very mobile and easy for everyone to walk around with a stick.
“Just imagine pork belly cut in strips then rolled in a lollipop with a stick poked through it,” he said.
“It’s all been marinated with our smokey seasoning then we finish it off and present it with a smokey BBQ flavoured sauce.”
OTHER NEW OPTIONS
DOUGIE’S DONUTS
This year Dougie’s donuts will be available at the Woolworths Fresh Food Pavilion from $6 each.
The donuts that will be at the show include fan favourite flavours including Lemon Meringue, Fairy Bread, Vanilla Slice and M&M Nutella.
CHICKEN SCHNITZEL ON A STICK
The options of food on a stick are endless this year with chicken schnitzel also on a stick.
There’s the classic but also parmigiana, Hawaiian or a Mexican twist.
COCO CHEESE HOTDOG
The Korean inspired street food will be available at the Woolworths Fresh Food Pavilion.
The corn dogs will be filled with mozzarella and topped with a range of coatings like sweet potato or ramen.
FISH IN THE FAMILY
Fresh seafood will be a new addition to the Woolworths Fresh Food Pavilion.
There will be plenty of North Queensland Tiger Prawns and South Australian Coffin Bay oysters to share.
THE SMOKEHOUSE
The Smokehouse located on Gregory Terrace will bring delicious smoked brisket, southern inspired burgers and creamy slaws to the forefront of the Ekka.
HOMEMADE DUMPLINGS
Individual hand rolled dumplings will be available at the Woolworths Fresh Food Pavilion.
Several flavours will be available including pork and chives, chicken and cabbage and beef, onion and carrot dumplings.
DOMINO’S
A Domino’s Mobile Pizza Kitchen will be at Gregory Terrace to sell individual slices of pizza.
The MPK is expected to cook the favourite items in just 120 seconds.
WONDERBAO
There will be a range of different baos on offer at Gourmet Plaza including a gua bao or a filled bao.
Various fillings include roast pork belly, battered chicken and crispy tofu.
LA MANO TACOS
La Mano Tacos will be at Gourmet plaza serving up pork tacos with a verde sauce and lime picked onions.
They will also service Cheese tacos and a special Ignacio nachos with all the trimmings.
RUBY ROLLS
Ruby Rolls will bring their OG sausage roll made with premium beef, fresh herbs, veggies and sesame seeds on puff pastry to King Street.
Other favourites like the spinach and feta roll will be there as well as a vegan corn, peas and roast pumpkin version.
CLAW
A California inspired crab shack will be at King Street with a menu of fresh shellfish and Texas smoked beef brisket.
THE HOT DOG DELI
The Hot Dog Deli will be at Gourmet Plaza offering loaded hot dogs, the New York classic with mash and gravy, the Chicago with caramelised onions with a pickle relish and an American Chilli Sauce made up of beef and mince.
WINGHAUS
On King Street Winghaus will offer all things chicken wings and a range of 40 taps.
