Longtime to serve yum cha but not as you know it

A new restaurant is set to open in one of Brisbane’s most elite shopping centres, promising to shake up a yum cha as we know it.

One of Brisbane’s most luxury shopping precincts will welcome a new yum cha restaurant designed to flip traditional dim sum on its head.

Longtime will move into the CBD’s QueensPlaza above Gucci, serving a luxe take on the Cantonese favourite without a dumpling trolley in sight.

From successful Brisbane restaurateur Andrew Yu, behind Japanese eateries Kamikaze in Chermside, Broadbeach and Coomera, and partner Beverly Teo, the new venture aims to bring an East-meets-West approach to yum cha, with kooky dishes and cocktails, rather than the usual tea pairings.

“After you do your shopping, you can come here and have your brunch and champagne and cocktails,” Mrs Teo said.

The couple have been trialling the concept at their other venue Yum Cha Cuisine at Westfield Garden City in Upper Mount Gravatt with great success and believe the concept will tie in perfectly with QueenPlaza’s high-end brands.

The yum cha menu will run all day from 11.30am, featuring more than a whopping 50 dim sum items, from classics such as barbecue pork buns and shrimp dumplings to the untraditional cheeseburger spring rolls and squid ink rice noodles with edible gold leaf. Guests can pair them with an array of traditional cocktails or about 20 Asian-inspired blends using the likes of sake, Japanese whisky and the Chinese alcohol baijiu.

In the evenings, Longtime will also offer an a la carte menu of about 40 dishes, including signatures such as crispy beef in mandarin sauce, King prawns with homemade XO, Cointreau chicken, chicken feet in black bean sauce, soft-shelled crab Singapore-style with crispy buns and their version of Peking duck called Forbidden duck, which comes with a special surprise when carved at the table. There will also be live seafood tanks with the likes of lobster and crab.

The venue will provide seating for 200, including in two private dining rooms and a balcony facing Adelaide and Edward St.

Longtime is due to open the end of October.
