It’s the cult-favourite rural bakery that has been smashing records for nearly a decade, and its now descended on a quaint suburb west of Brisbane city.
Kenilworth Bakery’s fourth storefront has officially opened in Samford Village and the story behind the venue is one of fate.
Owner Jenna Ward first took over the century-old bakery in the rural town of Kenilworth in 2016 at just 23-years-old, and has overseen its journey to become a world-renowned spot, with venues in Kenilworth, Mooloolaba and Bribie Island.
Ms Ward said they had been searching for a Brisbane venue for close to two years, even almost sealing the deal on a spot in Teneriffe, before a twist of fate saw Samford land in their lap.
The venue, at 52 Main Street, has taken over the former Little Tree Bakehouse and Brew space, which closed in early April, and is clearly the perfect location for its new owners.
Aside from fitting the bakery’s established country-town vibe, Samford was actually where Ms Ward herself was born, making the move a return to her roots, with the venue purchase happening just days before her fourth baby’s due date.
It was a big move for the team, welcoming a new baby and taking on a fresh venue and a whole suite of new staff, including some who were employed by the venue’s previous tenants, but it has clearly paid off.
The bakery soft launched to the public over a week and in the first weekend sold more than 8000 doughnuts.
Even on Wednesday, the bakery sold out of their signature eats by 11am, selling more than 2000 doughnuts.
Their popularity is hardly unsurprising given how viral the brand has gone in recent years.
From the introduction of their 1kg long-john, jam and cream doughnuts and sausage roles, to their quirky coffee in a doughnut and most recently a risque remake of Robert Irwin’s internet-breaking Bonds photo shoot, they know how to market themselves.
Ms Ward’s father starred in the tongue-in-cheek shoot, which is featured in frames throughout the Samford venue, donning nothing but his own briefs, lounging in a field, armed with a toy python and a mega-sausage roll.
Beyond their Insta-famous fare, the bakery is well stocked with mouth-watering sweet treats and savoury bites alike and they have got some cool things still in the works.
Taking on the current daytime rave trend, Ms Ward said the venue planned to host their very own doughnut rave in the coming months.
