Ice cream, arts and acrobatics will combine for a first-of-its-kind festival on the Gold Coast this summer.
The inaugural three-day Scoop event will be held at the GC’s HOTA in Surfers Paradise featuring an ice cream alley, alongside showstopping acts by more than 100 of the best circus, cabaret, acrobatic and music performers from across Queensland and Australia.
“What do we love about summer? We love the outdoors, we love water, we love ice cream and why not combine all that together,” said HOTA head of programming Virginia Hyam, who is working with the event firm behind Brisbane’s Ice Cream Festival, Liquidity Marketing, on creating the event.
“It’s about bringing a string of extraordinary artists together with the best ice cream in Queensland.”
The festival will be spread across the entire arts precinct, and will showcase up to 30 ice cream and gelato vendors, including the hugely popular Ungermann Brothers, La Macelleria and plant-based Cocowhip.
Brisbane’s beloved Doughluxe will also create an ice cream-filled doughnut, while organisers are working with some top chefs to hold stalls offering everything from Iced Vovo trifles to fairy bread ice cream.
In addition there will be food trucks, bars and a special adults only five-course sweet and savoury ice cream-inspired degustation paired with boozy beverages.
Also sure to get crowds excited is renowned circus ensemble Company2, which will set up a 20m-plus tightrope directly across the lake to perform a brand new overwater show, The Wired Moon and The Ice Cream Floor.
Other acts Circa, Hoopla Clique and Flipside Circus are also creating water-specific works; while the synchronised swimming group Gold Coast Mermaids will impress audiences with a special performance.
Live bands and DJs will play across various stages, and if that’s not enough, sparks will literally fly when daredevil act The Space Cowboy perform three jaw-dropping high-octane shows.
“Within the scope of what we’ve got there’s something for everyone to enjoy and it’s your choice as to how you navigate the experience,” Ms Hyam said.
To ensure the festival is COVID-safe, it will be run in sessions across the three days from January 15-17, with three sessions on Friday and Saturday and two on Sunday.
Guests will have plenty of room to spread out, with capacity limited to 1750 people per session.
“People will be able to see the performances and not feel jammed in.”
Tickets go on sale Wednesday, December 2 at hota.com.au
