It sat empty and untouched for four years, salt and pepper shakers still on the tables, seats tucked in like it could spring to life for service at any moment. But now after changing hands, Sandgate’s beloved former RSL has undergone an almost $3m makeover and is set to open its doors next month as The Sands Social on Keogh St.
From the team behind Chermside’s Kedron-Wavell Services Club, the new two-storey venue will feature a restaurant, sports bar, lounge, small TAB and function space for up to 100 cocktail-style and 60 seated.
“We are bringing a club back to Sandgate,” assistant general manager Vjorn Bradow said.
“A lot of people have asked for it. Sandgate is very community focused and the club was one thing that was missing for four years, and we’re very excited to bring them The Sands Social.”
The building’s complete refurb has transformed it into a modern tropical oasis for guests with a bird theme throughout, hues of green and blue, timber detailing and lots of greenery echoing the local landscape.
The new restaurant will boast a slight Italian theme, with head chef Stefano Tartaria previously of Windsor’s Va Bene eatery in the kitchen.
Diners can expect a wood-fired oven turning out crisp pizzas, while pasta will be made fresh on-site each day; alongside club-style favourites such as parmigiana, steak, fish and chips, and share plates.
A solid list of Australian wine will be available, including a variety of wine on tap, while there will be plenty of craft beer, including as many local brands as possible.
Cocktails will also be a focus, with the team currently working on a twist on the classic blue lagoon in a nod to Sandgate’s many watering holes.
The Sands Social is pushing for a mid-February opening.
