Ekka Online 2020 offers drive-through for iconic eats

The Ekka might have moved online in the age of COVID-19, but you can still get your fix of its trademark treats with special pop-up drive-throughs. FIND OUT HOW

Food reigns supreme at Ekka (2018)

TAKEAWAY dagwood dogs and strawberry sundaes will be sold through the car windows of diehard Ekka fans as the iconic show moves online for the first time in its history.

The show, which was cancelled earlier this year due to COVID-19, will live on through Ekka 2020 Online from August 7 to 16, along with drive-through outlets for Queenslanders to get their traditional Ekka foods.

”Do it yourself” strawberry sundae packs will also be available for the first time in the show’s history as part of several drive-through outlets at the Brisbane Showgrounds and a King St pop-up in Bowen Hills.

RNA chief executive Brendan Christou said Ekka 2020 Online paid homage to the popular event that has united more than 32 million Queenslanders from the country to the city since 1876.

“Only twice before in the Ekka’s 144-year history has the show been cancelled – in 1919 due to Spanish influenza and in 1942 due to World War II,” he said.

“When we announced the cancellation of the show, we wanted to ensure people could still get a taste of the show, not just through online engagement but also ensuring our iconic strawberry sundaes were available.”

A special one-off fireworks display will take place on Ekka eve to signal the 10 days of Ekka 2020 Online.

It will still feature farmers, animals, entertainment and agricultural education, including a virtual baby animal nursery, a “meet a farmer” segment, and a behind the scenes of the show’s freestyle motocross show.

Several competitions will also still be held including the Prime Beef, Bush Poetry and Wool competitions.
