Brisbane’s top burger joints are battling to be named the best in Australia, and an augmented reality game is giving residents a free taste of the competition.

Australia’s No.1 competitive eater, Cal Stubbs, hand-picked Red Hook, Hashtag Burger and Waffles, and Wahoo’s for the national competition in which they’ve designed their best burgers ever.

Hundreds of burgers will be given away as Mr Stubbs, known as HulkSmashFood to his 188,00 Instagram followers, tours the country over the next two weeks tasting creations from 19 burger joints.

His judging criteria covers freshness, creativity and flavour.

“I think what will set the winner apart is their use of fresh local ingredients and a great bun,” he said.

“I’ve done a lot of food challenges in Brisbane and I’m excited to enjoy their burgers this week without being timed.

“We’ve picked the pest places we could find.”

Each business will give away 10 burgers each day through a Pokémon GO-style treasure hunt orchestrated by social media app LITT.

Punters can download the app and hunt down the augmented reality burgers across Brisbane suburbs.

Once the burger is captured, LITT’s built-in map will show where the augmented reality version can be swapped for a real life burger.

“Forget Pokémon GO, this is Burgermon Go,” co-founder Brett Thompson said.

Hashtag Burgers and Waffles owner Matthew Rollo said he was excited to place Brisbane burgers on the map.

He believes his Fortitude Valley shop has a good chance of taking the crown with its Get Litt burger which features cheesy toast buns and onion rings.

“We are ecstatic to be a part of the competition,” Mr Rollo said.

“A big part of the fun for us is creating the food and coming up with new burgers.

“We’ve been following Cal on Instagram for a while now and he will be the first international big hitter we’ve had in our store.”

The Get Litt burger will be up against Red Hook’s Buffalo Soldier, featuring crumbed chicken and buffalo sauce, and The American Double Trouble from Wahoo’s which includes two beef patties with house salsa.

The one-of-a-kind burgers are on sale from Monday and judging will take place until June 5 when the Burger of Origin winner is announced.

The free burgers can be won using LITT
