Brisbane footy food set for a shake-up with swanky new offering

Move over pies and beer, Suncorp Stadium is set to raise the quality of its food offering with a swanky new rooftop bar. But numbers and opening times will be strictly limited.

Forget chips and pies, food at the footy is set for a shake up with a swanky new rooftop bar and restaurant set to launch at Queensland’s Suncorp Stadium.

An initiative of the Brisbane Broncos club, Sonny’s will be a glam Mexican-themed eatery on level seven of the stadium, where punters can watch the game while sipping margaritas and munching on tacos.

“What we’ve done is create a new entertainment space,” said Dan Glass, Broncos general manager of commercial.

“It’s less about the football and more about the whole experience there.”

The 200-plus-capacity previously unused space will be transformed into a Mexican-inspired resort, with sunlounges, high bar tables, umbrellas and views to the footy field below as well as Mt Coot-tha; while DJs and live bands will keep guests entertained between tries.

Standard footy fare will also make way for a menu of tacos and nachos provided by local Mexican providore Carlos Tacos.

And while XXXX will, of course, be available, at Sonny’s the drink of choice will be margaritas; alongside Casamigos tequila – made famous by George Clooney, premium spirits, and wines from labels such as Seppelt, Lindemans and Wynns.

Only operating during the 12 Broncos home games this year, the venue will be ticketed, with the public able to buy their way in online for $89, which covers entry to the bar/restaurant and the game, which you can watch from in front of the restaurant.

“It’s a place to gather with friends, have fun and relax in a resort-style vibe,” Glass said.

Sonny’s Rooftop Bar will make its debut this Friday for the Broncos vs Rabbitohs game.
