After its shock closure in August, popular Brisbane cafe Willow and Spoon has reopened with a fresh face at the helm aand plans for growth.

Long-time hospitality guru Matt Moses has bought the northside institution from former owner Keith Nunns, who wanted to spend more time with his young family following more than a decade running the eatery, which had endured floods, theft and a spate of other recent difficulties.

Mr Moses previously operated the hugely successful Ruggers Restaurant at Brothers Rugby Club in Albion, and wants to recreate some his winning formula at Willow and Spoon, while maintaining the charm and personality the cafe is known for.

“(Willow and Spoon) had that same feel and family vibe that I had created with Ruggers and I think I can keep the cafe the same as it is but maybe look to incorporate some of the function business we had at Ruggers, which was so popular,” Mr Moses said.

That means using the cafe’s covered outdoor area at the rear of the site to host everything from kids’ birthdays to engagement parties for 50-90 guests.

“We feel very honoured to continue with the great name and the brand and if we can improve the business and create more function business that helps the business greatly,” Mr Moses said.

While functions will be a priority, the venue will also continue its beloved breakfast and brunch offering with favourite dishes returning such as their “better bacon and eggs” and truffle toast.

The cafe will also be looking to increase its lunchtime offering with daily and weekly specials including freshly made pastas, such as a duck ragu and lasagne.

The drinks list will also be slightly expanded with more wine and beer, basic cocktails and spirits; while there are plans to potentially open for an early dinner on Friday and Saturday nights in the New Year.

Mr Moses has already given the upstairs dining space and bar a quick makeover, with a renovation of the playground out the back also on the cards to give local mums and dads a place to relax and unwind while their kids run around.
