Is that Orlando Bloom at the next table? Katy Perry in the coffee queue?
It seems you can barely go out to eat these days without running into a celebrity, with Queensland hosting a large roster of film crews since the onslaught of the pandemic made Down Under an attractive film location.
A few months ago George Clooney and his wife international relations lawyer Amal were hanging out with Julia Roberts in the Lobby Bar of the glam Calile Hotel in James St in Fortitude Valley, where the menu runs to grilled Tropical North Queensland lobster or perhaps duck liver mousse.
Roberts and Clooney’s film Ticket to Paradise, shot in various Queensland locations including the Centenary Pool in Spring Hill and the Whitsundays, hits the big screen on September 15.
In Cairns this week, OrlandoBloom visited Noa restaurant in up-market Cairns suburb of Edge Hill where he tucked into prawns, which usually come with curry sauce and bread on the side, with broccoli from the broad menu that runs from breakfast through to dinner.
He’s filming Wizard! with US actor and comedian Pete Davidson in various North Queensland locations, including the fresh produce and food stall wonderland of Rusty’s Markets in the Cairns CBD.
When Davidson’s girlfriend Kim Kardashian flew in for a visit a couple of weekends ago various potential encounters were offered up, including an excited local waiter who shared stories to Instagram saying they had taken Kardashian’s $576 order at Cairns Italian eatery Piccolo Cucina last Tuesday, and thanking her for the “hefty tip”.
The restaurant’s manager said the receipt was for a phoned takeaway order, including truffle arancini, margherita pizza and caprese salad, that was going to a plane leaving for the US so it’s unconfirmed but maybe Kim was chowing down on Cairns’ finest as she crossed the Pacific.
Meanwhile, Bloom’s wife, mega musician Katy Perry, was spotted settling in with a coffee at Choo Choos at the Crystalbrook Marina in Port Douglas, which also serves fare including rice and coconut pudding and avo smash.
Baz Luhrmann, who spent a lot of time on the Gold Coast filming recently released biopic Elvis, apparently loved Broadbeach’s Lupo restaurant, which has just morphed into the 16-seat Piatto, run by the same family.
The director, who also made the decision to film in Queensland after enjoying lunch including a famous bug roll at Rick Shores at Burleigh, hosted a dinner with wife Catherine Martin in support of Queensland Ballet with the help of Burleigh’s Restaurant Labart.
While in Queensland for the filming, Tom Hanks, who plays Colonel Tom Parker in Elvis, enjoyed 50 cent chicken wings and $10 cocktails at Bonita Bonita and Bon Bon Bar at Mermaid Beach.
Australian actress Olivia deJonge, who plays Priscilla in the film, came to love the coffee at No Name Lane Cafe at Nobbys Beachduring filming and went straight back there for a caffeine fix on her recent return for the premiere.
Matt Damon sent Brisbanites into a frenzy last year when he popped into the Queens Arms in Fortitude Valley for a morning schooner of Great Northern before a surprise appearance at a charity lunch in the nearby Calile Hotel.
Fellow guests later reported he also visited the hotel’s SK Steak & Oyster and Hellenika restaurants. Perhaps he was tipped off by mate and Byron Bay neighbour Liam Hemsworth, who has visited both.
Actor Kyle MacLachlan of Twin Peaks fame, here to film the TV series Joe Exotic last year was out-and-about at a number of Brisbane eateries including Reef Seafood and Sushi at the Gasworks Plaza in Brisbane’s Newstead and King Arthur Cafe.
Melbourne celebrity chef and restaurateur Guy Grossi, recently spending time in Brisbane to prepare to open a restaurant named Settimo in The Westin hotel in the CBD in November, says he’s eaten at SK and Hellenika at the Calile, Bianca in adjacent Ada Lane and Otto at South Bank, while another celebrity chef Adrian Richardson, who is also establishing a restaurant named Boss on the site of the old Otto in Queen Street, slated to open in October, has apparently been a regular at SK.
As for local celebrities, Reds rugby union star Wallaby James O’Connor enjoys coffee from The Single Guys, Kenmore, and Peach Cafe, Auchenflower, which has just reopened after a refit following the floods earlier this year.
Retired netball star and now commentator Laura Geitz loves The Olive Grove Cafe and Dennis’ Espressivo in Kenmore or Wild Canary in Brookfield for breakfast.
Justine Schofield, TV cooking show host and author, has reported enjoying dinner at La Cache au Vin in Spring Hill and that her French mother also was a fan. Louise Bezzina, artistic director of the upcoming Brisbane Festival loves coffee from Fonzie Abbott in Albion and going out at Howard Smith Wharves, with Greca a favourite.
Alastair McLeod loves a date night at Otto at South Bank and picking up a pizza from Tartufo in the Valley, while musician Jaguar Jonze enjoys iced chocolate from Gramps Cafe at Red Hill and visiting Uncle Don in Rosalie for a pork katsu sando and Wagyu beef don.
On the Gold Coast, Olympic champion and Channel 7 sports presenter Sally Pearson loves 5B2F Bakehouse at Southport for eggs on toast and a coffee and has enjoyed Mamasan in Broadbeach, Hot Tomato breakfast host Emily Jade O’Keeffe loves Double Barrel in Benowa for a coffee and Nineteen at the Star and actor George Pullar loves Highline Palm Beach or Good Day at Tugan for coffee and snacks and Caracara at Tugun for a date night.
