QUEENSLAND MasterChef runner-up Matty Sinclair is proving he’s more than just a reality TV cook.

The Sunshine Coast resident’s first restaurant Sum Yung Guys at Sunshine Beach, which he opened in June with mates Dylan Campbell, Jeremiah Jones and Michael Rickard, has been named one of Queensland’s most delicious in the inauguraldelicious. 100in this weekend’s The Sunday Mail.

“In terms of accolades and to be involved in a list like this, I don’t think we ever saw ourselves being among that, but it feels incredible — everyone is gobsmacked,” Mr Sinclair said.

Opening the pan-Asian, casual eatery was a passion project for Mr Sinclair, with the dream to create approachable, familiar food with fresh ingredients.

“We just thought we’d produce some tasty food and we’d have a good atmosphere and keep it really casual, and keep it warm and inviting,” he said.

While Mr Sinclair was able to use his prize money from MasterChef to buy kitchen equipment and get the word out about his restaurant, he said his appearance on the TV show also meant he had to work twice as hard to prove himself.

“That’s probably the greatest battle I’ve had to fight to date, to be honest. People don’t want to know that I’ve been in hospitality since I was 14; they don’t care about that,” he said.

“They just think, ‘Oh here we go; here’s another guy who’s gone on another cooking show and now he thinks he wants to cook for the rest of his life, but wait till he gets into the industry — that’ll show him’.

“The best thing is, all my business partners I’ve worked in the industry with them for close to 10 years now, so as long as we know between us that we deserve to be here and are passionate about what we do, that’s all the matters.”
