QLD's 2022 road toll described as "concerning"

Families and friends are mourning the death of a 17-year-old who tragically passed away after a car crash on the Barkly Highway last Friday night.

Joshua Thatcher, 17, was driving with three other teenagers in his car last Friday night when he lost control of the vehicle and veered off the Barkly Highway near Mt Isa just before 11.30pm.

Shortly after emergency services arrived, Mr Thatcher was declared dead at the scene.

Following the crash a GoFundMe Fundraiser has been organised.

Fundraiser organiser Casey Thatcher said Joshua was a well-known, loved member of the Mount Isa community and a friend to many.

“Joshua’s sudden and unexpected passing has left our family absolutely devastated, all while trying to work out the logistics to take him home,” Casey Thatcher said.

The fundraiser has raised $10,913 dollars over 17 hours reaching just over half of its final goal of $20,000.

The petition announced the funds are being raised to assist in transporting Joshua to his home town, Gisborne, “his final resting place.”

“This page has been created in hopes to try help ease the financial burden while we navigate through this overwhelming loss,” Ms Thatcher said.

“We have been advised it is going to cost an estimated $30,000 to take him from Mount Isa through to Auckland. It will be another $5,000 – $10,000 to get him home,” Ms Thatcher said.

The page announced that donated funds will be going to Joshua’s family
