BEST MOTION PICTURE OF THE YEAR
Little Women
THE HONOUR’S ALL YOURS, THE SPOILS ARE ALL THEIRS:
Though an exceptionally strong line-up, many titles are already out of contention for reasons away from pure excellence.
Joker and Jojo Rabbit are just too edgy for voters.
Conversely, Little Women andFord v Ferrari play it too safe (though that certainly didn’t stop Green Book last year!).
Once Upon a Time has not gained traction in this category throughout this awards season.
DESERVES TO WIN, BUT WON’T:
The real wildcard chance here is South Korea’s Parasite. This irresistible fable has quietly become a box-office phenomenon around the world.
The Netflix-produced prestige features The Irishman and Marriage Story would both be likely winners in most other years. However, their direct link to the streaming giant is a massive strike against their chances.
AND THE WINNER IS …
1917. A superior war film with an unusual visual design, 1917 has surged to the forefront of Best Picture calculations after stringing together an impressive sequence of “lesser” awards in the past month.
In addition to its clear quality and trailblazing camera work, the movie’s ability to appeal to every demographic should ensure success.
Although the similarly themed (and equally technically accomplished) Dunkirk was overlooked by the same voting body just a few years ago.
