BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Kathy Bates, Richard Jewell
Laura Dern, Marriage Story
Scarlett Johansson, Jojo Rabbit
Florence Pugh, Little Women
Margot Robbie, Bombshell
TAKE A SELFIE TO REMEMBER THE NIGHT:
Johansson was the unsung heroine of Jojo Rabbit’s unlikely success. However, the movie’s controversial subject matter (Hitler is a featured character) has held it back all awards season. To be frank, Robbie is lucky to be making the field here. Her fictionalised role never quite synched up with the factual firepower deployed by Bombshell. Three-time nominee Bates is no chance whatsoever.
DESERVES TO WIN, BUT WON’T:
Any other year, this would be a cakewalk for British rising star Florence Pugh. The lightweight status of Little Women — a family movie based on a classic book adapted many times before — has obscured what is a truly heavyweight performance by Pugh.
AND THE WINNER IS…
Laura Dern. This much-admired character actress kept picking up Marriage Story and shaking it like a rag doll as she pleased. Though not the most likeable of roles — she plays a divorce lawyer who gets her results by any means necessary — Dern kept finding something relatable that had viewers glued to her every move.
