Xier Pontigon, 8, racks up nearly 2 million views after meeting NBA superstar Donovan ‘The Spida’ Mitchell

An eight-year-old basketball tragic from the Gold Coast got to meet his sporting idol, and has now racked up a whopping 1.8 million views online.

A YOUNG Queenslander and avid Spider-Man fan has had a one-on-one encounter with his biggest sporting hero — and gone viral as a result.

Gold Coast boy Xier Roland Pontigon, 8, flew from the Sunshine State to Sydney to watch Team USA’s Donovan Mitchell play at Olympic Park, and ended up meeting one of his biggest rolemodels himself.

Since the video was uploaded to the NBA’s official Instagram account on Monday, the video has racked up a whopping 1.8 million views, 1.3 million in only the first five hours.

Mitchell’s Instagram story shows the eight-year-old rebounding during a practice session, referring to Xier as “little spider”, a reference to his Spider-Man outfit and the American basketballer’s nickname ‘the Spida’.

Speaking to The Courier-Mail, Xier’s father Rollie Pontigon said the meeting was a dream come true.

“Ever since he could stand up, he would play (basket) ball,” Mr Pontigon said.

He said Xier’s Instagram fame came about when he went to Olympic Stadium wearing a Spider-Man outfit and waving a sign reading ‘Spida … I’m your biggest fan’ and was noticed by Mitchell.

“He got invited in, so he was allowed to go onto the court, and then was asked, ‘do you want to shoot a round with me?’” Mr Pontigon said.

“It was the highlight of the game and went crazy on the NBA feed.”

He said Xier was still hyperactive following the encounter, despite having to go back to school on the Gold Coast tomorrow.

“He’s still very stoked,” Mr Pontigon said. “For him, it was just being on the court and getting to meet his idol.”

He said Xier earnt the chance to go to the game in Sydney by working hard both at school and home.
