Gold Coast Basketball has been gifted the best 60th birthday present they could ask for after they were awarded Basketball Queensland’s 2018 association of the year on Saturday night.
After just recently overtaking Brisbane to become the state’s biggest basketball association, the Gold Coast can also now call themselves Queensland’s best after taking out the award ahead of Townsville Basketball and the North Side wizards.
“The association is as only as good as its members so we’re extremely lucky to have members who represent the best parts of our game; teamwork, commitment, fun and sportsmanship,” said Gold Coast basketball manager Joel McInnes after accepting the award.
“Our players, coaches, referees and volunteers and even our spectators demonstrate every day the value of the sport and recreation in the community.
“You are the reason our association continues to grow and why others want to be a part of it so thank you to our members.”
McInnes also lauded the impact of the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast’s rapid spectacular rise.
“We’re very fortunate to have benefited from the attention across the recent Commonwealth Games and the new stadium has raised the profile of the sport on the Gold Coast,” he said.
“Last year, we had a very special moment when our Under 14 girls won the nationals at club which was a fabulous moment for the association.
“Our success is a direct result of my staff who have been working countless hours during the Commonwealth period and leveraging the profile of our kids playing during that time.”
The association will now turn its attention towards a Friday night QBL coast clash against the North Gold Coast Seahawks.
Last Friday night the Seahawks men went down 85-99 to the Logan Thunder while the women also lost 62-82.
