Who is Brisbane’s MasterChef finalist Ben Borsht?

BRISBANE born-and-raised Ben Borsht has landed the coveted top 2 spot ahead of the MasterChef Australia 2018 grand finale.

Tonight he will go head-to-head with fellow finalist Sashi Cheliah to fight for the title, but who is this local Brisbanite?

As MasterChef’s resident seafood king, it’s no wonder that 31-year-old Ben grew up fishing with his parents in Moreton Bay. With every weekend spent fishing with the family, Ben seems to have developed a natural skill for all things seafood from an early age.

He attended Brisbane Boys’ College and at 17 started a carpentry apprenticeship. Five years later he worked as a builder alongside his handyman father for several years. Between work days, Ben admits he and his dad may have taken a couple of midweek fishing trips.

When Ben isn’t fishing or working he loves arts and crafts — a skill he inherited from his grandmother who was a sculptor. He enjoys painting and making earrings for his wife Caitlyn, who hopes he will take out the title of MasterChef Australia 2018 tonight.

In 2016, Ben was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, a chronic inflammatory bowel disease, which was debilitating and forced him out of work.

With treatments failing to help, he underwent a total colectomy — the removal of his large intestine — and was fitted with an ileostomy bag.

Two days before the judges’ auditions, Ben got a call to say he could have his final surgery, which would have meant bowing out of MasterChef to take a month to recover.

After last night’s epic cook off that eventually saw Melbourne DJ Khanh Ong sent home, Ben was “completely shocked” to find out he made the grand finale.

“It was a completely surprise to me — I never imagined getting as far as I have,” he said.

And although they will face off against each other in the kitchen tonight, Ben promises that the heat of the competition has not driven a wedge between the two finalists.

“I consider Sashi one of my brothers — we get along really well,” he said.
