Life’s special moments are better shared.
That sentiment has never been clearer to Channel 7 Queensland’s leading women.
After sharing their pregnancy journeys this year, Sally Pearson, Amanda Abate, Liz Cantor and Kendall Gilding gave birth within two months of each other between August and September.
Coming together for the first time with their newborns before Christmas, the group of women, each at the tops of their careers as news anchors and presenters – and Pearson a former Olympic champion turned sports anchor – discussed how they helped each other through their careers and motherhood.
“It’s nice to know you’re not alone,” Gilding said.
“We’ve all actually leant on each other a lot, and when everyone tells you they’re going through the same thing, it makes it easier to get through.”
The women are part of a group chat and regularly swap tips and share tales.
“There’s been so many moments where you could break down, but instead we’ve laughed because we’ve been able to lean into each other and that’s pretty cool,” Cantor added.
Abate, news anchor for Channel 7 Gold Coast, welcomed daughter Pia, her second child, on August 11 to complete her family.
Pearson, who began her new career as sports presenter on the news bulletin this year, gave birth to son Harry, also her second child, on August 24.
Gilding welcomed Moses in Brisbane on September 28, a brother to their daughter Olive, and Cantor gave birth to her third child, a daughter named Sky, two days later.
“We’ve had two kids and we’re not going to have anymore and I love the feeling that, oh this is our family now, we’re complete and happy,” Gilding said.
“Everything changes,” Abate said. “I think I’m the most confident I’ve ever been now as a mother. All the small stuff you used to sweat, now not a big deal any more when you’ve got little people that rely on you for pretty much everything.”
While Pearson is already back on deck for Channel 7 Gold Coast, Cantor and Abate will return for the Magic Millions Carnival in January and Gilding will resume her post reading the afternoon bulletin in Brisbane early next year.
For Pearson, as a former athlete, being welcomed into the fold while starting a new career has been uplifting,
“All the tips and advice you get from each other is interesting. Sometimes you think you might know something but then someone has a different way of doing it,” she said.
