Life is about to get a lot busier for Sally Pearson, who has landed a new gig presenting sport for Channel 7’s Gold Coast News as she prepares for the arrival of her second child.
After recently opening up about her difficulty finding a career outside athletics, the former world champion hurdler and Olympic gold medallist has been snapped up by Channel 7 in the new sports presenter role alongside Gold Coast news anchors Amanda Abate and Steve Titmus.
It comes as Pearson reveals she is 14 weeks pregnant with her and husband Kieran Pearson’s second child, due in August, a sibling to their daughter, Ruby, one.
“It’s definitely something we’re looking forward to. Balancing is just in everyone’s life, isn’t it. You just have to make it work,” Pearson told the Sunday Mail.
“I’m excited, nervous, scared like I would be if I was doing athletics, and that’s what I wanted, I suppose out of a new career path – something that gave me that little bit of what athletics gave me.
“It’s nice to be starting to find that again.”
Pearson, who continues to mentor for Athletics Australia, retired from the sport in August, 2019, before welcoming her daughter Ruby the following July, which took her focus.
She said while the feeling of being lost kicked in almost instantly, it started to “bother” her this year.
“I’ve always wanted to be in the media but I was too scared to I guess go for it … all those self doubts and imposter syndrome coming in,” she said.
“I realised it’s a new year and I really need to start thinking about what I’m going to do with myself and ways to support my family. I had to really kick myself up the bum and give it a go.”
She persisted knocking on the door at Channel 7 News, where she had made guest appearances in the past, and they quickly offered her the new role.
“I’m finding my way again which is nice and not just going around in circles,” Pearson said.
Pearson will join Channel 7 Gold Coast News from Monday, February 28 at 5:30pm.
