Bruno Mars Brisbane review: Entertainment Centre, March 14

THEY’RE the inevitable bits of live shows that come off as totally corny - unless they’re done by the super-smooth Bruno Mars.

IT TAKES special talent to make a show choreographed to within an inch of its life appear effortlessly cool - but Bruno Mars has that gift in spades.

The R&B superstar proved to be the ultimate showman with the first of two big performances at Brisbane Entertainment Centre last night.

The 32-year-old singer had his thousands of fans on their feet within seconds, kicking off the concert with Finesse and following up with 24K Magic.

Flanked by a live band and backup singers and dancers, Mars churned out hit after hit in a sleek show featuring fireworks and impressive lighting.

“Come on, is Brisbane in the house?” he yelled to thunderous applause.

“It feels real good in here tonight Brisbane.”

The playlist covered all the fan favourites.

Mars, who collected six gongs - including song, record and album of the year - at the 60th annual Grammy Awards in New York in January, encouraged fans to put down their smartphones and “let your hair down”.

The talented artist, who performs at the venue again tonight as part of the Australian leg of his 24k Magic World Tour, also sung favourites Chunky, That’s What I Like and Versace on the Floor.

Mars’s signature smooth dance moves went hand-in-hand with flawless vocals to create a spectacular show.

It also says a lot about the star that even those “bits” that should come across as completely corny - such as the dialogue between Mars and his crew that leads into some of his biggest hits, or the chanting of “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, oi, oi, oi” - are instead both cool and charming.

Mars, who even played guitar for a few numbers, also delivered Marry You, When I Was Your Man, Locked Out of Heaven and Just the Way You Are before finishing with Uptown Funk.

Perhaps the biggest (and only real) criticism was that it was over too soon.

The amazing performance followed the unfortunate news that popular support act Dua Lipa had cancelled her Brisbane performances to undergo dental surgery.

The British star, who was set to open for Mars, said she had been advised by doctors to immediately remove her wisdom teeth after performing in “awful pain” for previous shows.

“I’m so sorry to have to cancel some of my support shows with Bruno,” she said in the statement.

“I have been enjoying this tour so much and am upset that life has gotten in the way but hopefully I’ll have a speedy recovery and make it back as soon as possible.

“Thank you for your understanding.”

After Brisbane, Mars will jet to Sydney before later playing Adelaide and Perth.
