Australian-owned cruise ship set for maiden voyage in Europe

By Kerry van der Jagt

Less travelled than the other major European river cruise routes, the Douro River in Portugal offers a bounty of attractions, including the Douro Valley wine region.

Late next month, APT Travel Group’s newest river ship, MS Estrela, is set to grace those waters on its maiden voyage, visiting locations such as Regua, Pinhao and Porto in northern Portugal.

Purpose-built for the Douro River by local shipbuilders in Portugal, the MS Estrela will be the flagship of several new tours through the Douro Valley and beyond, with guests enjoying seven nights aboard the vessel on the 14-day “Douro Delights with Madrid and Lisbon”.

With a capacity of just 114 guests, it promises an intimate experience, Iberian-inspired meals based on local produce, spacious interiors and a sun deck with pool, bar and outdoor lounge beds. The decor is chic and contemporary, with three cabin categories – window stateroom, French balcony suite and owner’s suite.

As an Australian-owned company, the Melbourne-based APT Travel Group knows what Australians want in a river cruise ship – a casual, yet elegant atmosphere, options for light meals or three-course offerings, including international flavours plus some tastes from home (Vegemite, anyone?) and ample opportunity to soak up the alfresco lifestyle.

Guests also appreciate fine-tuning their holiday through APT’s wide selection of sightseeing and dining inclusions offered through Freedom of Choice. A wide range of onboard beverages are included.

APT Travel Group currently has three state-of-the-art ships – the Vega, Capella and Polaris – navigating Europe’s waterways and sailing under the Travelmarvel brand. Continuing the convention of being named after the most luminous stars in European skies, the MS Estrela will be the group’s fourth ship, with the APT Ostara and APT Solara joining the constellation in 2025.

“The Douro Valley is quickly becoming a favourite for Australian travellers due to its stunning landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and exceptional culinary experiences,” says David Cox, chief executive of APT Travel Group.

“We know Australians have a deep appreciation for authentic travel experiences, and the Douro offers just that, with historic towns, world-class vineyards, and an abundance of traditional activities on offer.”
