Lonely Planet top 10 regions list a 'massive boost' to WA and the Kimberley
By Aleisha Orr
Western Australia's Kimberley region could be set for an influx of tourists after coming second on Lonely Planet's list of top 10 regions to visit.
Part of Lonely Planet's Best in Travel 2014 series, the list identifies the best trends, destinations, journeys and experiences for the upcoming year.
Tourism Minister Liza Harvey said the book's endorsement of the Kimberley as one of the world's top 10 regions for next year was a massive boost for the region's tourism industry.
"The Lonely Planet endorsement is a huge boost for the Kimberley's global profile, and will hopefully inspire a new wave of visitors to this extraordinary and unique wilderness region," Mrs Harvey said.
Lonely Planet described the Kimberley as "one of the most sparsely populated regions on the planet and one of the most starkly beautiful, carved by giant gorges, dimpled with deep, cool pools and home to a coastline that could make Australian east-coasters weep."
The guide also labels the Gibb River Road as the ultimate road trip.
Mrs Harvey said the timing of this recognition could hardly be better with the Kimberley featuring as part of Tourism WA's latest campaign.
"The Kimberley ad features locations including El Questro Wilderness Park, Home Valley Station, the Bungle Bungle Range, Cable Beach and Gantheaume Point."
The advertisements are being screened on free-to-air television and in cinemas in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth and on pay TV and outdoor cinemas across the country as part of a $3.6million campaign.
