The mornings are getting frosty which means truffle season is here. The Canberra Truffle Festival officially starts in June and runs until August, with more than 250 events showing off the region's fresh black truffles. Here's our pick of three things to do during the festival:

1. TASTE

With so many truffle farms in Canberra's surrounding districts, it's not surprising that you'll be able to find truffles on the menu at many restaurants, cafes, bars and wineries around town during the festival. At Agostinis Restaurant in East Hotel, the oozy truffle burrata arrives dramatically in a plume of smoke, or have freshly shaved truffle on a pizza. Mount Majura Vineyard is serving truffled brie alongside their wine tastings, and Contentious Character will have truffle dishes, a truffle dinner and even some visits from the truffle dogs. Head to 65 Northbourne for a four course truffle inspired degustation with matching wines. There's even truffle beer - BentSpoke Brewing Co have brewed up silverback, a dark malty strong ale infused with cumquats, mandarins, star anise, cinnamon, vanilla beans and truffles. It's available on tap at their Braddon brewhouse. Keep an eye out for plenty more truffles on menus all throughout the season.

2. HUNT

Rug up and head out with the dogs for a truffle hunt. You'll get to learn about how truffles are formed and watch the dogs in action - you may even be able to dig one up yourself (unfortunately you'll have to hand it back). Some hunts are also followed by a meal where you get to enjoy truffles fresh from the source for the ultimate paddock to place experience. Others can also be combined with a cooking class so you can learn to cook with the black truffles yourself, before dining on your own creation.

3. A DIFFERENT KIND OF HUNT

It's not just the dogs who can take you hunting for truffles this year. The very cute bettongs at Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary are lovers of truffles and have this year joined the festival's program. The native truffles the bettongs love are a bit different to the European variety you will find on plates, so tours start with a tasting of truffled cheese and Mount Majura Vineyard wine, before you head out into the night to spot the tiny marsupials.
