Sometimes you have an itch that only a sandwich can scratch. Some superstars have just come into rotation.

Lagoon Dining

The Carlton eatery that borrows from the canons of Cantonese, Sichuan and Japanese cooking has expanded its arsenal for lockdown with some hefty hand-held options. Namely, two fried chicken burgers to stop you in your tracks. They debuted the OG chicken in July – fried chicken, salted green chilli mayo and 'slaw – and have now upped the spice factor with a 2.0 version that teams your crisp fillet with chilli sauerkraut and tonkatsu sauce.

Rockwell and Sons

The pandemic had to have an upside and it has finally arrived: Rockwell and Sons' legendary double patty smash burger is back. It's the burger that makes no apologies – two chuck and brisket patties, luminous Kraft cheese, a tomato-tinged mix of mayos with pickle and onion for pep – and neither should you. After a first limited run, they are now offering them from Tuesday to Saturday from Bar Liberty in Fitzroy but also distributing the build-it-yourself packs via Meatsmith to cover areas beyond the Fitzroy bubble.

Roman's Original

Footscray, you got lucky. Leigh McKenny's (normally) vinyl-spinning house of outlandish cheeseburgers, and passata-sluiced eggplant parmas swaddled in the crisp-shelled, cloud-centred Vietnamese baguettes from Nobel Bakery are on your agenda. This might come as news to you since the website remains coy on details, but the full range is there for walk-in (on your exercise hour) or you can pick up the signature meatball sub, mushroom sandwich or ebi katsu via Deliveroo.

Hector's Deli DELIvery range

In monumental news for sandwich fans, Hector's Deli has created sandwiches for DELIvery, starting this Thursday. The trademark toasted tuna and mushroom melts don't travel well enough to make the cut, so they have devised stable, fresh offerings such as sourdough Turkish bread heavily loaded with mortadella, piccalilli, mayo and white pepper or straciatella, salami, Calabrian chilli paste and pickled fennel with a vegetarian grilled eggplant version, and egg salad. They will switch delivery suburbs by day so watch out for yours. Given they weren't operating at all in the first lockdown (instead they were making sandwiches for the ASRC), it's a major boon.

Ladro x Fancy Hank's

Italy meets the 'Merican south in a union for the ages. Fancy Hanks, house of smoked meats, and pizzeria Ladro are joining forces to create potato rolls filled with Ladro's juicy polpette and provolone. If you prefer your carbs flat and loaded, you can also get Hank's 12-hour smoked brisket on a pizza with pickled onions and watermelon hot sauce.

Available for pick up from Ladro's Fitzroy and Prahran outlets or Fancy Hank's in the CBD, or have them delivered. ladro.com.au; fancyhanks.com
