Just Open: N2 Extreme Gelato, Newtown
The dessert makers who once created a calamari-flavoured gelato have opened in Newtown.
Following the success of outlets in Sydney's Haymarket and Melbourne's Fitzroy, N2 Extreme Gelato Newtown will have a local flavour.
"It's very different from all the other N2s," owner Min Chai says. "We're going for something crazy."
In line with the chain's unusual interiors, patrons can watch their gelato being blasted with liquid nitrogen through a glass shield. They can then muse and consume sitting on ladders and milk cartons.
As for the gelato itself, Newtown won't be shielded from N2's experimental style, which has included outlandish flavours such as cough syrup and salt-and-pepper squid at other stores.
"I have an adventurous palate," Chai says. "I came across Messina and saw how they were very creative but I still wanted to push it further - I want to push people out of their comfort zone with new flavours."
One of these is beer and prawn crackers, which features Newtown-brewed Young Henry's ale with a crunchy prawn cracker garnish. Creamy and sweet, the punchy ale flavour comes in the aftertaste whilst the prawn cracker dissolves on the tongue.
Another opening flavour is the flutterby sorbet, made in collaboration with the local T2 tea shop. It's made from the flutterby flavour tea and Turkish apple herbal tea.
Operating on a rotating menu, the unusual flavours will change weekly.
