Just Open: Mammoth, Armadale
Having nailed a seriously winning formula with venues such as Barry, Touchwood and Pillar of Salt, young husband-and-wife team Loren and Jamie McBride are on a roll – launching their latest baby, Mammoth, last week.
Occupying a handsome, heritage-listed corner space in an otherwise cafe-sparse pocket of Armadale, the seven-day operation bears many of the hallmarks of the team's characteristic style. A quick look around will reveal the same combination of smart interiors, slick branding and clever, zeitgeisty fare that helped turn Barry into a heaving, queues-out-the-door behemoth.
The breezy, pastel hued fit-out is split over two rooms, with limited outdoor seating on the footpath. Meanwhile in the kitchen, the McBrides have recruited ex-Hammer & Tong chef, Emma Jeffrey, who has come up with what must be some of the most highly stylised takes on brunch we've seen in some time.
Among the menu heroes are the tropical-tastic North Shore, featuring smoky ham hock hash, grilled pineapple, jalapeno pepper and poached egg, and a sweet/savoury Donut Burger (yes, that's a doughnut as a bun) stuffed with lobster, green mango and papaya slaw, cucumber jam and Sriracha mayo.
For the uber-fancy breakfast averse, humble eggs on toast are also an option.
You'll also find smoothies, pressed green juices and coffee by Five Senses, house-made raw slices and a range of Matt Forbes' pastries.
Open Mon-Fri 7am-3.30pm; Sat-Sun 7.30am-4pm.
