US seeks Australia’s backing on labour in Pacific trade deal

Washington | The Biden administration wants Australia to back its bid to lift labour standards when 14 countries meet in Brisbane this week to begin working out details for the US-led Indo-Pacific Economic Framework.

Washington is seeking higher standards as a condition of more favourable trade terms between the US and other members of the IPEF, an initiative announced by President Joe Biden in May as a counter to China’s growing influence in the region.
