US House passes spending bill to avert shutdown
Washington | The US House of Representatives voted on Tuesday (Wednesday AEDT) to avert a costly shutdown, in a significant victory for the new Speaker that keeps the government funded until early next year, even as it delays billions of dollars in funding for Ukraine and Israel.
The House voted to support a plan from recently elected Speaker Mike Johnson to keep spending at current levels into next year. But Democrats needed to bail out the Republican Speaker, whose bill drew opposition from hardliners in his party because it did not cut government spending or change border policies.
