A US senator has gone into bat for Australia, arguing in a heated exchange with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer that Donald Trump’s tariffs were an “insult” and undermine the security relationship between the two partners.
Virginia senator Mark Warner, a Democrat, used a Senate hearing to slam Greer, who insisted Trump was not about to back down on his plan to correct a $US1.2 trillion ($2 trillion) trade deficit while raising revenue to finance tax cuts.
