As counting stops for the night in most US states, here’s the current state of play:

• Donald Trump has locked up 267 electoral college votes, just three shy of the 270 needed to clinch the presidency. Kamala Harris has 224, having picked up Minnesota (where her VP pick Tim Walz hails from) just now.
• Trump won the key swing states of Georgia and Pennsylvania, AP projects. He also took Maine’s 2nd Congressional District and Nebraska’s 1st; the two states are the only ones that don’t use a winner-take-all system to award its electoral college votes. Harris won New Hampshire.
• By winning Georgia and Pennsylvania, Trump flipped two states he lost to Joe Biden in 2020 but won in his first run for president in 2016. Four other battlegrounds, Arizona, Michigan, Nevada and Wisconsin, have yet to be called. Trump needs just one to win the White House.
• Addressing supporters, Trump claimed victory though he hadn’t clinched it yet. He celebrated the GOP capture of the Senate and claimed it had also won the House, though there are still too many races that must be called before control of the lower chamber can be determined.
• Treasury yields held their advances following news that Trump clinched Pennsylvania. The rise in yields has supported gains for an index of US dollar strength of 1.5 per cent in Asian trading.
