When Donald Trump finally signed off on his tough trade deal with China almost five years ago, he asked his chief negotiator how he felt after endless tension and sleepless nights.
“It was tougher than I thought,” Robert Lighthizer responded, prompting laughter from those gathered at the White House, including China expert and now Australian ambassador to the US, Kevin Rudd.
