That’s a wrap

Thanks for following the Need to Know blog this Friday. Here are the biggest stories from the day:

  • Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar’s body was recovered by Israeli forces from a house in Rafah’s devastated Tel al-Sultan refugee camp, about 155 metres from active Israeli military positions.

  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel has “settled its account” with “the person who carried out the worst massacre in the history of our people since the Holocaust”.

  • US President Joe Biden said he was “hopeful” of a ceasefire now Sinwar was dead and that it was “time for this war to end”. Other world leaders, including Anthony Albanese, joined in this renewed call for peace.

  • But Iran said the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar will strengthen the “spirit of resistance”, saying it will inspire young people to push for Palestinian freedom.

  • Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant group also said on Friday it was moving to a new and escalated phase in its war against Israel after the killing of Sinwar.

  • Back in Australia, former Home Affairs Department boss Michael Pezzullo’s Order of Australia honour was revoked by the governor-general over breaches of the public service code of conduct.
