That’s a wrap
Thanks for following the Need to Know blog this Friday. Here are the biggest stories from the day:
Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar’s body was recovered by Israeli forces from a house in Rafah’s devastated Tel al-Sultan refugee camp, about 155 metres from active Israeli military positions.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel has “settled its account” with “the person who carried out the worst massacre in the history of our people since the Holocaust”.
US President Joe Biden said he was “hopeful” of a ceasefire now Sinwar was dead and that it was “time for this war to end”. Other world leaders, including Anthony Albanese, joined in this renewed call for peace.
But Iran said the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar will strengthen the “spirit of resistance”, saying it will inspire young people to push for Palestinian freedom.
Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant group also said on Friday it was moving to a new and escalated phase in its war against Israel after the killing of Sinwar.
- Back in Australia, former Home Affairs Department boss Michael Pezzullo’s Order of Australia honour was revoked by the governor-general over breaches of the public service code of conduct.
