Defence Minister Richard Marles warned the “catastrophe” in the Middle East needed to end amid mounting fears of escalation, after Israel launched separate air strikes in Lebanon and Iran, assassinating the political chief of Hamas.

The terror group and Iran announced that Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in Tehran early on Wednesday, in a major blow to the militant organisation.
